Big Hero 6

This was really good.  It is loosely inspired by an obscure Marvel comics team.(This team first appeared in Alpha Flight.) You can enjoy the movie even if you have never heard of the team before now.

The movie is set in San Fransokyo and it starts with two brothers living with their aunt. They are very smart. The older brother, Tadashi, is in a special college and the younger brother, Hiro,  is involved in ilegal robot fights.

Tadashi takes Hiro to the college and Hiro is inspired to go there. develops an amazing tool called a microbot and  a bunch of them working together can do amazing things. He enters them in a competion to get into the school but a fire kills Tadashi.

Hiro is depressed. This is when Baymax, Tadashi’s medical robot, re-enters the movie. (Baymax was introduced early in the movie.) Baymax makes his mission to heal Hiro.  Tadashi’s friends later become a team using their inventions and cleverness.

It is a fun movie. The story focuses mostly on Hiro and Baymax. The other members of the team are there mostly to support Hiro.  If there are sequels (hopfully there will be sequels), maybe they will get more chances to shine.

You want to get to the movie  on time to see the short before the movie. It is good.

(Yes, there are Marvel superhero teams that are more obscure than Alpha Flight.)

Movie thoughts 10-28-2014

Benedict Cumberbatch is going to be Dr. Strange. At least it looks very likely that he will be Dr. Strange. That seems to be a good choice. I am glad that it is not Johnny Depp.

The first Avengers Age of Ultron trailer is out. It is good, not great. Maybe I expected a bit too much. James Spader’s Ultron voice is creepy though. Of course the movie doesn’t open for another 6 months or so.

The trailers for Interstellar look good. The movie opens next week.  There are some early reviews and I think they’re mostly postive. Big Hero 6 also opens next week. Next weekend looks good.

This weekend Nightcrawler opens, I have not seen a lot of promos for it. Maybe it will be good.

Trailer thoughts 10-1-2014

The trailer for Taken 3, or Tak3n, is out. It looks decent. Maybe the movie will be worth seeing. I skipped part two but this new trailer does  tempt me a little.

The trailer for  the animated Justice League:Throne of Atlantis is out. It looks good. It should come out on DVD early next year.

I already wrote about the new Big Hero 6 trailer. It is pretty good.

The John Wick trailer came out pretty close to the opening of the movie.  I first saw the trailer last weekend and the movie comes out on the 24th. That is kind of interesting.

Movie Thoughts 9-25-2014

The new Big Hero 6 trailer is good.  This movie looks like it will be a lot of fun. This has been a good year for animated movies. Even if my nieces and nephew don’t want to see it, I will see it.

Some members of the X-men, like Cyclops and Jean Grey, will be re-cast in the next X-men movie.  I guess it will work out.  I think James Marsden never quite enough to do in the X-Men films.

A Walk Among the Tombstones is really grim. I lost interest.  Maybe I just was not in the mood for something that grim this weekend. Or maybe Lawrence Block’s fiction works bettr on the page than on the big screen. I knew it would be grim but on the big screen, it felt even grimmer than I expected.

Two Night Stand is getting bad reviews. I was thinking of going. Maybe I will skip it. It is on 20% on Rotten Tomatoes.  Teller is getting good reviews but the movie as a whole is being called confused or disjointed. His movie Whiplash is mentioned in a few reviews, I guess the critics like Teller so much that they wanted to recomend a better movie with him.

Sex Tape is getting bad reviews. Jason Segel cowrote it, so if the reviews are right, he is more at fault than Cameron Diaz. One review suggests that Segel is not good. Wow, he cannot write decent material for himself. (Okay, that might be a bit mean spirited.)

There is new trailer for Big Hero Six. I think that movie is going to be a lot of fun. It looks like it might be really good.  I might go even if my brother’s kids don’t want to see it. I think that they will want to see it.

The Purge Anarchy opens this week.  The first Purge was a big hit on a low budget but some critics said it was just another home invasion thriller. The sequel looks a bit different and it got some decent reviews. I wonder if it will be a hit. I am not sure I buy the centeral concept.

Hercules opens in a week. Guardians of the Galaxy in two weeks.  I will probably see both. I am not sure if I want to see Lucy.

Big Hero 6 Coming to the Big Screen

J. Young-Ju Harris

So apparently when Disney bought out Marvel that didn’t just mean that they would have the ability to make live action movies based on stories from the comic book company. As it turns out, Pixar will be doing an adaption of Big Hero 6. A somewhat obscure comic in the realms of the Marvel universe, the original story is about a team of heroes assembled by the Japanese government to serve its interests and protect its people.

The Pixar adaptation seems a long way from this original story line. From the trailer it appears to be more of a YA type story, but I suppose that makes sense, given Pixar’s target audience. The teaser only shows the protagonist, Hiro Hamada, starting to build a robot. I’m guessing the other members of the team will be shown later on, but the current trailer is really lighthearted and entertaining. To see…
