Sterling Hayden stars as Johnny, a criminal looking for one last score. He has a complicated plan, perhaps an overly complicated plan, to rob a racetrack. He recruits a team of people to help with his plan.
Stanley Kubrick directed this movie. It was his first major feature. The movie is complicated. It is not linear, there are flashbacks to the same race from different characters’ perspectives as each one plays his part in the plan.
This is similar to the Asphalt Jungle but a little different. Both films were adapted from novels and both involve well planned heists that go wrong. However Sterling Hayden is the mastermind in the Killing while he was a thug in the Asphalt Jungle. The two films might make an interesting double feature.
