Summer of Noir: the Naked City

This is a classic. It is about a murder investigation in New York City. It was directed by Jules Dassin, who also directed Brute Force.

Barry Fitzgerald stars as Lt. Muldoon of homicide. He and a small squad investigate the murder. One of the suspects is Howard Duff (who was radio’s Sam Spade).

It is a bit light hearted for a film noir. There are some light moments with Muldoon and some of the other cops. It was shot on location in New York City and featured a voice over narration including the classic line “there are eight million stories in the Naked city, this has been one of them.”

This movie inspired a TV series of the same name. The movie showed the step by step process of investigating a crime.
