Prisoners

This is a good movie.   It is not a fun movie but not all fun movies are good and not good movies are fun.

Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Terrence Howard star in this movie about what happens when two young girls disappear.  Jackman and Howard star as  the fathers of the girls and Gyllenhaal stars as the detective investigating the case.   Paul Dano stars as the suspect.  Maria Bello and Viola Davis offer strong support as the girls’ mothers.

Each actor is good.  Howard is probably being a little unrated in reviews, at least in the reviews I’ve seen.  He is not the star of the movie but he is good. I am not sure if this is Jackman’s best performance in years as a few critics have said but it is pretty good.  Gyllenhaal is good as the cop.

There is more to the plot than the trailers show.  However the plot does touch on the question of does the end justify the means.  Is Jackman’s character justified in his brutal treatment of Dano’s character?

Is Pittsburgh really this gray and overcast?   (I thought the movie was set in Pittsburgh or at least fairly close to there. )

Prisoners is at 78% on Rotten Tomatoes.
