Van Helsing re-watched

I bought a copy of Van Helsing on Blu-ray/DVD combo pack recently.  I had not seen it in a few years and I was surprised how much I liked it.

Hugh Jackman stars as Van Helsing. He has no memory of his past and he is working for the Church as a special agent/monster killer.  After killing Mister Hyde in Paris, Van Helsing is sent to Transylvania to deal with Dracula and help a family who has been fighting Dracula for generations.  (Mister Hyde seems to have been inspired by League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.)

I liked the film a lot on re-watching it.  Jackman is a likable action hero, the plot is silly but fun, and some of the supporting characters are fun.  Jackman doesn’t have great romantic chemistry with Kate Beckinsale but that might be a product of the plot.  (It doesn’t slow down enough to explore characters.)  Also, I liked the black and white prologue.

The film was directed by Stephen Sommers, who is best known for the Mummy and the Mummy Returns.  It might not be his best film but it is better than GI Joe.

Tom Cruise is rumored/suposed to be staring in a remake of Van Helsing.
