The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises is good but not great.  I think it is a bit too long at 2 hours and 45 minutes.  I think Batman Begins is probably the best of Nolan’s Batman films.  I liked Liam Neeson as Ra’s Al Ghul.

As this movie opens, Batman has been retired for eight years and Gotham is in the best shape it has ever been or at least as it has been in years.  Harvey Dent is being hailed as a hero and “the Dent laws” have been used to take out the mob.  I am not quite sure what those laws are exactly (I guess the novelization probably explains it better).  Batman is suspected of Dent’s murder.

The Joker is not mentioned at all.  I guess considering Heath Ledger’s death that is probably the best option.  A mention of the Joker might remind people of Ledger’s death.

Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) steals something from Wayne Manor but really wanted Bruce Wayne’s fingerprints.  This inspire Bruce Wayne/Batman to action.  Hathaway is really good in the part.  Some actresses cannot move from comedy to action movies but she did.  (Selena is never called Cat Woman in the film.)

Bane appears in Gotham City to destroy it.  (Bane was seen in an earlier sequence kidnapping a scientist from the CIA.)  Bane breaks Batman, which he did during the Knightfall storyline a long time ago.   Bane has never been one of my favorite Batman villains and he is still not.

A lot of screen time is given to young cop John Blake.  This is not a bad thing.  Jospeh Gordon- Levitt is really good in the role.  Blake knows who Batman is and he inspires Batman to further action.  (Batman needs a lot of inspiration in this movie.)

Here are some problems with the movie

  • it is a little bit too long
  • the music score is too much at times
  • Bane doesn’t interest me that much
  • The movie is not much fun (I’d like to have a bit more fun in a superhero movie)
