Sherlock Season Two, and Zen

I have been buying some British television mysteries lately   In the last month or so I’ve bought Sherlock Season 2, Zen, Inspector Lewis series one, and the Last Detective series one.   I am enjoying them.  This posting is about Sherlock and Zen.

Sherlock Season two  is pretty good and it proves that the successful first season was not a fluke.  There are 3 new episodes.  Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson in cases inspired by A Scandal in Bohemia, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and The Final Problem (three of the most famous Holmes stories).  For the casual fan it is at least worth a rental.  Both actors are good and the supporting cast does good work.  There will be a season three.

Zen is a three episode series or season based on the novels of Michael Dibdin.  (I have never read any of the books so I have no idea how much was changed in adapting the series to TV.)  Aurelio Zen is an Italian detective and so far I found the cases interesting.  Rufus Sewell is good as Zen, an honest cop in a country riddled with corruption, and the actress Caterina Murino is good as his love interest.  I still have one episode to watch.  The series is going to be re-run on PBS this summer, it is worth checking out.  Hopefully there will be another series.
