If there is a better movie than Marvel’s the Avengers this year, it is going to be a pretty good year for movies. The Avengers is as good as it is reported to be and it might be even better than Iron Man. I will have to reflect on that. (Okay, Roger Ebert was less than impressed but he is in the minority.)
Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Clark Gregg, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, and Tom Hiddleston are all back from previous Marvel movies. Mark Ruffalo takes over as Bruce Banner/the Hulk from Edward Norton (who took the part after Eric Bana). Ruffalo is good. Cobbie Smulders comes in as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill, she might have the least to do of the main cast.
Three things that stood out
- Chris Evans is even better as Captain America than he was in his solo movie; he played off Robert Downey Jr well
- for a movie that is over two hours long, the pacing is really good
- the epic battles are epic but easy to comprehend (some battles in movies lately have been confusing)
Where Marvel goes from here is hard to say. Another Hulk movie seems a possibility. Another Avengers movie seems possible.
I still wish there had been a reference to Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne. It would have been nice for them to get some mention, they are founding Avengers after all. Oh well, you can’t have everything.
