The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games movie was pretty good, maybe even really good.  It is grim.  I have not read any of the books so I can’t say how well the movie matched the book.  (I might read the book in a month or so.)  Woody Harrelson and Donald Sutherland are on hand to  lend presence and class to the proceedings.   (Class is not the word for Harrelson.  On a note unrelated to this film, Harrelson was really good in the HBO movie Game Change.)  Harrelson is really good and I hope his character is in the sequel.  I was not sure if the move was supposed to set in a near future or an alternate timeline (an America with a different history).  I guess that detail was not covered well.

Jennifer Lawrence is really good as Katniss Everdeen.   (I like that name, it is different but not overly symbolic.) If she were less good, the whole movie might have fallen apart.  I think this will make her a major star.

Something about this movie makes me think of Logan’s Run.  The plot is not  similar and Logan’s Run was more obviously set in the future.  I am not sure why but I thought about Logan’s run while seeing this film.

So far, this is the best movie of 2012.
