Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law return as Holmes and Watson in this follow-up to Sherlock Holmes. They are both good but the movie is not the equal of the first movie in the series. This movie is still enjoyable though.
I think the first movie in the series had two advantages. One was Mark Strong as the villain Lord Blackwell. He was really good and had a commanding presence. I don’t think the actors playing the villains (Professor Moriarity and Colenel Sebastian Moran) were quite as good. Also I liked the faux supernatural aspect of the first film/Blackwood’s scheme and how Holmes explained it away at the end.
The other was the interaction with Downey as Holmes and Rachael McAdams as Irene Addler. McAdams returns briefly but since her screen time is so brief, it is a bit of a disappointment. (Maybe it would have been to have more of her character or to write her character out of the film completely.)
I think the movie is a bit too action packed. I think there should be a bit more logic and reasoning and deduction.
As I said, this sequel is not without it attractions. It was nice to see Mycroft Holmes on-screen. It was nice to see inspector Lestrade return as well but it would have been better if he had more screen time and a scene opposite Holmes.
